Year 12 pupils enjoy a French cultural day

April 7th, 2025

Yesterday, I had an amazing opportunity to experience French culture whilst staying in Newcastle. First we went to the Tyneside Cinema to watch a French comedy called “Juste Ciel (Oh My Goodness in English)”. The film was wholly spoken in French but was accommodated by english subtitles so we could all have an understanding of the plot. The film was very funny and incorporated some French that I’ve never heard before! Next we went to The French Quarter which is a contemporary style French restaurant. All of the dishes there are small plates meaning we were able to try a lot of different french food. I tried boeuf bourguignon, ratatouille, tartiflette, some sort of duck dish, charcuterie board with a range of different cheeses and meats, bread and frog legs! For dessert we had creme brulee, chocolate mousse and hot chocolate. Most of the food was delicious however I was not a fan of the frog legs! We all practised our french speaking skills by ordering our drinks and dishes in French which will help me develop my confidence in French speaking! Overall, it was fantastic to have a day to dive further into French culture!

Yesterday my French class had a great opportunity to improve our knowledge of French culture by watching a French film and sampling some French food. I thought the film was greatly beneficial in hearing native speakers converse using natural language and the english subtitles allowed us all to enjoy it thoroughly. However my personal favourite part of the day was the chance to try real french food such as escargot and frogs legs (both of which I greatly enjoyed!) and this was very interesting to experience in relation to our studies of French heritage of which gastronomy is a large part. And the fact that we had to use French to order our meals was good for helping us experience using French in a real life setting.

Overall in my opinion the trip was a great way for us to really experience French culture more rather than just learning about it in the classroom and I think the good times gave everyone a greater appreciation for what we have been studying.
