In exciting news for the local culinary community, Malachy Rowe, a talented young chef, has reached the regional finals of the prestigious School Chef of the Year (SCOTY) competition. The event, set to take place on May 1st, 2025, in Barnsley, promises to showcase the skills of some of the brightest culinary stars from the North East.
Rowe will have 90 minutes to prepare a two-course school lunch in front of a distinguished panel of judges. For his entry, Rowe has designed a creative and carefully crafted menu that is sure to impress. His main course, Chicken Normandy with Cocotte Potato, features a delicate chicken ballotine served alongside roasted cocotte potatoes, apples, green beans, and a smooth squash purée. For dessert, Rowe has chosen to prepare a Poached Pear Clafoutis, a classic French dessert with a modern twist, showcasing his flair for both traditional and contemporary flavors.
Rowe will be joined in the competition by fellow chefs Steven M, representing Richard Coates, and Michael C, from The Duchess’s, both competing as part of the same trust. They will be facing off against two other talented chefs from the North East, each vying for a chance to advance to the final round of the national competition.
“It’s a huge honor to have made it to the regional finals,” said Rowe. “I’m excited to put my skills to the test and represent our trust. Hopefully, one of us will make it through to the national finals!”
As the competition heats up, local supporters are rallying behind Rowe and his colleagues. All eyes will be on Barnsley as the chefs demonstrate their skills, creativity, and passion for school catering.
The outcome of the regional finals will be eagerly anticipated, and with such a strong contingent representing the North East, the region has high hopes for a place in the national SCOTY final.
Fingers crossed that Malachy—or one of the other talented chefs—comes out on top and secures a spot in the national finals, bringing even more pride to the community.
The regional finals will take place on May 1st, 2025, with the results set to be announced shortly after the competition concludes. Let’s hope for a victory for our local chefs!
