Harry Potter night – Diagon Alley

Ponteland High presents ‘HARRY POTTER NIGHT – DIAGON ALLEY’

Welcome to the hustling, bustling heart of the Wizarding community – Diagon Alley.  Forty of our Pont High wizards entered into this magical world for a few hours on the evening of Tuesday 29 June 2021.

The evening began with the Secret Sorting Hat selecting students into their houses; cheers of joy and groans as the hat revealed their fate.

Four shops were opened on the night;

  • The Magical Menagerie
  • The Apothecary’s,
  • a Quidditch Match
  • Madam Malkin’s Robes for all occasions.

In true style there was lots of glue, glitter, material, and shredded paper to aid the design, make and model the robes.

 Anaya (Y7) commented, “Robe making was fun and exciting as we all competed against one another to see which was the best.”

Small scale potion making was a great hit with the students; colourful fizzing liquid in jam jars, but this could only be attempted after they had completed the quiz to earn the right to mix their potions.  Emily (7) loved this task saying, “the potion making was fun as the reaction was so cool.” Finally, judging by the commotion outside Diagon Alley, the Golden snitches were proving harder to locate than we thought!

As a new recruit to the planning of the Harry Potter night I wasn’t too sure what to expect and what we could possibly achieve. We had so many ideas of how to bring the wizarding world into Ponteland High School and I couldn’t imagine how we would ever make it possible. I cannot believe all that we managed to create and every second of the planning was worth it to see the smiles on the students’ faces. I am thrilled to have been a part of the whole experience and loved the excuse to finally get my old Gryffindor cloak out of the wardrobe again”.

Miss Brewis, English teacher.

Wizarding snacks and refreshments were provided to refuel the weary wizards.  The evening wouldn’t be complete without the edible chocolate frogs from Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour.  Spot prizes were awarded to students who showed integrity, kindness, bravery and other attributes.

Competition was fierce throughout the evening with each house being marked on teamwork, creativity, enthusiasm, knowledge etc.  The winning house was crowned at the end of the night; and for once it wasn’t Gryffindor.  Hufflepuff were our 2021 champions.  Well done to all our wizards!

On the back of each invitation to the event was a raffle ticket. These were all placed into a box and the winning ticket was drawn at the very end of the evening. Aaron (Y7) was the lucky recipient of Harry Potter’s Midnight Snack Box – I just hope that Aaron doesn’t eat it all at once!

Everyone involved had a brilliant evening.  Mrs Fisher said, “Wow, what a fabulous evening. I was so lucky to be invited to help out at the Harry Potter event.  Not only was it fun, interactive and exciting for the students it was a great event for the staff too. I sincerely hope this event will continue and grow year after year.”
